As there is no legal provision for municipal flags, many of
the municipalities just use the colours of the Land Salzburg (red-white) with the municipal coat-of-arms (information from the Salzburg state archives).
See Neukirchen am Grossvenediger and my recent observations in
Leogang. Others seem to use two or three colours from their coat-of-arms, but without any official adoption or involvement
of the state archives.

Over the last two years quite some progress has been achieved in the research of the Salzburg municipal flags.
Out of 119 municipalities I have
- sent information and drawings, in all cases based on flag photos, of 82 (69%);
- sent preliminary information without drawings, of 11 (9%);
- sent information that they do not have a flag, of 1 (1%);
- do not have any information at all about the flag, not even if they have one or not, of 25 (21%).
Of the known flags, only 10 do not follow the pattern "red-white (i.e. state colours) with municipal arms", namely
Berndorf, Bischofshofen,
Bürmoos, Dorfbeuern, Elixhausen,
Goldegg, Mauterndorf, Oberndorf,
Salzburg, Zell am See.
