About the flag

It is a quite typical portuguese municipal flag, with the coat of arms centered on a plain yellow background. The coat of arms is vert, a deer or crowned with an eschuton charged with five bezants argent set per saltire. Mural crown argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "VILA NOVA DE CERVEIRA".

A beautiful flag for a charming town, I say. Canting arms, since "cerveira" means "place of stags" ("cervo" = "stag").

Version without the coat of arms

Plain (monocolored) portuguese subnational flags are not allowed to have armless variations: plain flags always carry the coat of arms.

Presentation of Vila Nova de Cerveira

Vila Nova de Cerveira municipality had 9150 inhabitants in 1990, and it is divided in 15 communes, covering 110 km². It belongs to the Viana do Castelo District and to the old province of Minho.
