It is a quite typical portuguese municipal flag, with the coat of arms
centered on a background gyronny (meaning city
rank) of yellow and blue. The coat of arms is gules under two hoes or
crossed per saltire on a hammer of the same set in fess a local sailship
argent dressed of the same issuant from a wavy fess azure charged with a
fesslet argent above a counterchief of pebbles proper. Mural crown argent
with five visible towers (city rank) and
white scroll reading in black upper case letters "CIDADE DO
SEIXAL".

"Seixal" means "pebble ground", so the arms are partly canting.
The other elements have obvious symbology, pertaining to the local connection
with the Tagus estuary.

Seixal municipality had 152 489 inhabitants in 2000 (122 430 in
1990), and it is divided in 5 communes, covering 94 km2. It
belongs to the District of Setúbal, to the old
province Extremadura and to the would-be region
Lisboa e Setúbal.
