About the flag

It is a quite typical portuguese municipal flag, with the coat of arms centered on a plain red background. The coat of arms is argent a castle gules issuant from a ground sable stoned argent, in counterchief a wavy fess argent with two wavy fesslets vert covered by a fishing net or (pardon my grotesque blazoning). Mural crown argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "VILA DE CASCAIS".

Though there is no widely known castle in the municipality, it must stand for something in the coat of arms — perhaps for the casino and all the more than one century old turf center Cascais is (the municipality includes well known Estoril). The fishing net stands for the local fishing traditions.

Version without the coat of arms

Plain (monocolored) portuguese subnational flags are not allowed to have armless variations: plain flags always carry the coat of arms.

Like Sintra, though less often, there is a widely used variant of the coat of arms without the scroll.

Presentation of Cascais

Just like neighbouring Sintra, the municipal seat Cascais is proud of its town rank and had not applied to its upgrade, though it would be easily granted (enough population and strong economy). Cascais municipality had 168 827 inhabitants in 2000 (156 820 in 1990), and it is divided in 6 communes, covering 97 km². It belongs to the Lisboa District and to the old province of Estremadura.

Other flags

Estoril-Praia Futebol Clube

This one is, presumably, the flag of Estoril-Praia club, from Estoril, Cascais municipality, near Lisbon. Estoril-Praia is presently playing in portuguese “second division of honour”, and has been several times in first division. It never played in european competitions, though. The flag has five stripes of equal widths of yellow and blue. It is “presumably” the flag of Estoril-Praia because I saw it in the recent Portugal-Armenia under-21 match that took place in the stadium of the club, flying next to the national flags, the UEFA flag and the respective municipal flag, and because Estoril-Praia does use these colours. So, I’m not sure if it is really Estoril-Praia’s flag, but I think there’s a very good probability that it is.
