Van den Herik

[Van den Herik houseflag] image by Jarig Bakker, 29 Aug 2006

Sent in by barge spotter Jarig, an image showing the house flag of Van den Herik, a Dutch construction firm based at Sliedrecht and what is more, he has seen it in the cloth!  Company website (English version). The site presents Van den Herik as a versatile firm, founded in the 1940’s and currently active in waterway construction (industrial as well as ecology-oriented), foundation technology, hydrosurveying, removal of explosives, road development (construction firm Schouls taken over in 1990), and waterway conservation.  To get an idea,  have a look at the photos in the ‘Activities’ section.

The flag is white, bearing the company logo above the names VAN DEN HERIK / SLIEDRECHT, the latter shifted towards the right; said names are rendered in
blue, without serifs.

The logo is rather original, consisting as it does of a yellow disk bearing a picture of a blue quayside, seen in perspective and from behind which appears a blue initial ‘H’ connected, on its right side, to a blue slope above which appear light blue wavelets.

Heuvelman (HTS Group)

[Heuvelman houseflag] image by Eugene Ipavec, 11 May 2006

You cannot miss the house flag if you visit the website of Heuvelman aka HTS Group.
Versions in several languages are available.  Some company history was gleaned from this site (English version ‘Who or what is H.T.S.?’).
Three brothers Heuvelman founded Firma Gebr. Heuvelman in 1985, continuing the family inland navigation business.  Expansian led to a name change in 1999: H.T.S. Group i.e. Heuvelman Transport Systems being in fact a group of independent companies uniting three owned and 30 chartered vessels between 500 and 3500 metric tonnes.  Area of operations are the Benelux countries and Germany; the head office is at Oosterhout, conveniently located on the Wilhelmina Canal.

Another way of expanding business is the firm’s growing involvement in container terminal exploitation in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany, during the years 2000-2002.  While it is true that mostly containers are transported, recently bulk shipping – chiefly construction materials – has been taken up as well.

The company has a flag horizontally divided red above blue is placed a large yellow diamond, fimbriated in white and bearing a black outlined initial ‘H’; the size of the diamond and the width of the fimbriation are such that of the red and blue areas only triangles remain who moreover do not touch.

N.V. Stoomboot-Maatschappij "Hilligersberg" should read "Hillegersberg". One of the companies operated by Vinke & Co./Vinke & Zonen; its vessels changed to the ownership of associate N.V Stoomboot Maatschappij "Oostzee" on the mid 1960s.

Hoekstra Transport

[Hoekstra Transport houseflag] image by Jarig Bakker, 22 May 2006

Another Dutch inland navigation flag in the national colours with a black-on-yellow emblem is flown by Hoekstra Transport, a young company (active since 1995).
Two vessels transport bulk (sand, gravel), special loads, containers, or waste products such as polluted slip. Hoekstra cooperates with CZB, already presented.
The Company website (without address, however), shows a flagoid.
The house flag looks like a skewed rendition of the Dutch national flag, the white stripe being transformed into two wedges oriented towards a point near the hoist where a yellow disk bearing a black initial ‘H’ is situated. In addition, the larger wedge - in the fly - has the word “transport” (lower case) in black.

FTS Hofftrans

[FTS Hofftrans houseflag] image by Jarig Bakker, 4 Jun 2006

FTS Hofftrans, located at Botlek (Rotterdam), is a Dutch firm describing itself as the second largest independent heavy fuel transporter, with offices at Dordrecht and Antwerp (Belgium). Website, leading to the complete Dutch version – the one in English is still rather sketchy.

In the ‘Strategie’ and ‘Historie’ sections we learn that FTS (Fuel Transport Service) – founded in 1985 by J. Braams – and Hofftrans BV – founded in 1991 by A. van ‘t Hoff - merged to form the current firm, active in the ARA area we have come to know and also on the Rhine and German canals. This merger took place after a period of cooperation, starting 1997, between the former competitors thus ensuring their common place in a dynamic market.

Still expanding, FTS Hofftrans has recently launched its ninth double-hulled tanker and owns three single-hulled tankers of the fifteen currently under contract. Also of growing importance are oil storage facilities.

The logo on the site is shown in a flag drawing on the Binnenvaart site (vessel ‘Maxima’), dominating the white field.  Said logo consists of a blue figure ‘1’ (at least that is how I interpret it) overwritten by a yellow diagonal stripe echoed in the smaller yellow slash mark between the names ‘FTS’ and ‘HOFFTRANS’ in blue appearing under the ‘1’.

Hollandsche Aanneming Maatschappij B.V., Den Haag.
Flag: horizontal green over orange, proportioned c. 3:1; on green the firm's logo.
(the firm's trademark is a crab - the name means: contracting society, probably mostly in dredging and other activities crabs indulge in)

Koninklijke Hollandsche Lloyd

[Hollandsche Lloyd] from Josef  Nüsse's site.

Koninklijke Hollandsche Lloyd, Amsterdam - red - white - red proportioned 1:4:1; on the central stripe the colored seal of the States General, with a yellow (or white?) crown in the red stripe; the seal is yellow with a red lion passant armed and tongued blue, holding a bundle of 7 blue arrows in its left paw, and a blue sword in its right paw. On Josef  Nüsse's site is a good image (too dificult for me).
Jarig Bakker, 22 Oct 2003

The Hollandsche Lloyd was allowed to use "koninklijk" (royal) in front of its name, so its official name was Koninklijke Hollandsche Lloyd.
After it lost its independence it belonged first to Müller; it was later taken over by the KNSM, and, together with the KNSM it became part of Ned Lloyd.
