Overview

Rakovec is a community in the Zagreb County, about 35 km north-east of Zagreb, half way between the cities of Sveti Ivan Zelina and Vrbovec. It has about 1,350 inhabitants in as much as 12 settlements, so no wander that the village of the same name has only 245 inhabitants.
In correspondence with Mr. Branko Hercek, major of the community, I was informed that the design of the coat of arms and the flag of Rakovec was adopted on the session of the community assembly on 6th December 2007. This design is yet to be approved by the central state authorities, but its seems that these are already in use, nevertheless, at least judging from the web site at <www.rakovec.hr>. The design of the symbols was done by a company from Zagreb Grip d.o.o. I have certain suspicions how the central authorities are going to react to "yet another" St. Goerge and another tower - generally they discorage from these symbols as they are already overused in Croatian municipal heraldry, but in this combination they may actually be approved... we'll see about that.
The coat of arms of Rakovec is: quartered gules and or, in the first St. Geogre killing the dragon argent and in the forth ruins of a tower also argent. St. George is the patron of the community, the ruins represent the ruins of the old city of the same name above the modern settlement. The red colour in the shield represent to the martyrdom of St. George, while the golden represent the royal estate of Rakovec.
The flag is dark red with the coat of arms in the middle bordered yellow. It is said that this flag should have the staff at the right (sinister-hoisted) [although I would be very conservative in listening to such claim - it may well be just a misunderstanding... although the design of the horseman would surely justify such arrangement].
The ceremonial flag is dark red gonfalon ending triangularly with golden fringe, with the coat of arms in the middle, the name of the community in two lines above it and a wreath of oak and wheat ear in the base. The table flag is of the same design but without the rectangular indentations along the top edge.
The symbols are yet to be confirmed by the central authorities.
