Overview

The community of Janjina in the Dubrovnik and Neretva County at the center of the Pelješac (Sabbioncello) peninsula, with the sea acces on both sides of the peninsula. Only about 600 inhabitants in 5 villages. The community was established in 1997 seceeding from the community of Ston. In 15the century it was the seat of the Janjina Captainship (it may be mentioned that the great mathematician and physicist Marin getaldic [Ghetaldus, 1568-1626] was briefly also the Captain of Janjina, although he was dismissed after only six months "due to irresponsibility").
The adoption of symbols is mentioned in an article titled "Janjina dobila grb i zastavu" issued in Dubrovacki vjesnik, regional newspaper, nr 2976 of 8 February 2008, available at <www.dubrovacki-vjesnik.hr>.
The article claims that while the community was celebrating its 10th anniversary and its patron day (St. Blasius), the Coat of Arms and the flag were "received". They are described so: "on a shield of blue background a depiction of St. Blasius sitting. St. Blasius is patron of the parish since 1628 and is shown in the Coat of Arms after the sucpture in the Prince's House, the seat of former Captainship (military administration subdivision of the Dubrovnik Republic) of Janjina, established in 1465. The flag is yellow, while the ceremonial gonfalon includes also branches of olive and vine. The flag and the Coat of Arms as well as the small table flag was made by company Heraldic Art from Rijeka, after the design was granted approval from the Croatian State Archive. The design and of the Coat of Arms and flag costed the Community 15.000 kn (ca. 2000 €)."
I contacted the community and received an answer from the officials that the newspaper report was premature - the desiugn is still not formally approved from the Central State Office for Administration. The Office had certain requests for improval of the proposed design and this was done (around the begining of 2008) but the formal decision is not yet issued until today.
The Coat of Arms is pictured at <www.janjina.hr>.
