Eugen Cellier, Hamburg

[Eugen Cellier, Hamburg] image by Ivan Sache, 14 Jan 2004

Following the link found by Joe Mc Millan - The Mystic Seaport Foundation, we can reach the 1911 Lloyd's flagbook, whose full title is (after the scan of the cover): 'Lloyd's book of house flags and funnels of the principal steamship lines of the world and the house flags of various lines of sailing vessels', published at Lloyd's Royal Exchange. London. E.C.
On p. 133, we have: #2028. Eugen Cellier, Hamburg. The flag is blue with a white diamond charged with red letters E.C.

Eugen Cellier, no dots

[Eugen Cellier, no dots] image by Jorge Candeias, 9 Jan 2005

The flag is blue with a white lozenge touching the edges and red letters "EC" in the middle. Booooring! The caption is quite difficult to read. There's two words, starting with the initials in the flag, but I can't be sure about any of them. The second one is totally clurred, while the first one seems to read "Engt".

Reederei Clermont

[Reederei Clermont #2] image by Eugene Ipavec, 18 Jul 2006

To be honest, I first encountered the flag and then the company, only to find that the tangible item – the flag “in the cloth” – was different from the items on the company site… or so I thought at first. Reederei Clermont is a tourist shipping company operating out of Wismar, a German (formerly East German) town on the Baltics.  Websites (the first one is official) here and here.

Founded in 1990, this family business now operates four ships of which two are newly built.  Routes include visits to the harbour and immediate surroundings (have a look at the WWII concrete ship), to the island of Poel, chartered trips, and a regular line to nearby Wendorf.  Also possible are marriage ceremonies on board ship, presumably when the weather is not stormy (yet). 8-)

Now the flag, seen as a drawing on above sites and on several photos is white with a blue ascending diagonal stripe, a blue initial ‘C’ in the upper hoist and a blue steering wheel in the lower fly.

But a German eBay auction item 9531901274 (ended 23 June 2006) shows a version with a broad descending diagonal, the ‘C’ lower and the steering wheel higher.  See the original photo rotated and mirrored to bring it into line with the company version (tell-tale camera watermark now in the upper right corner, on its head!).

I am convinced that the attachment, as sent, shows the house flag correctly.

Continentale Rhederei

[Continentale Rhederei] image by Jorge Candeias, 23 Dec 2004

The flag is not only clear, but also quite striking: quartered of white and red with a black cross over all, whose arms join in a disc, all bordered in white and fimbriated in black. The caption is a nightmare. It seems to me that the main word begins with a C but I won't risk an interpretation of the rest. Next, we've got what seems to me a "Rh" abbreviation, and, to end, a "A.G." abbreviation.
Jorge Candeias, 23 Dec 2004

That is "Continentale Rhederei A.G., Hamburg". (A.G. = Aktiengesellschaft = Limited Company).
Jarig Bakker, 24 Dec 2004

Aug. Cords

[Aug. Cords] image by Jorge Candeias, 11 Jan 2005

The flag is blue with a red lozenge that has a white border that touches the edges of the flag. In the center, the two initials AC are white. The caption seems to read "Aug. Cords". Aug may be the abbreviation of August.
Jorge Candeias, 11 Jan 2005

White initials here: 'Aug. Cords, Rostock' as No. 964 of the on-line 1912 Lloyds Flags & Funnels. Aug. is indeed August: a short article about him (in German) is here. Dates 1859-1919, shipchandler in Rostock 1885, founded shipping company in 1903. Firm (still owned by descendants) moved to Bremen (after WWII I suppose), in existence till 1971.
