Flag and banner are red-white with the arms. Neuenrade
was granted arms in 1912, this followed the usual pattern of the red-white
chequered fess with a saint (see also
Altena,
Lüdenscheid,
Iserlohn),
here Mary with the Child. In 1969 and 1974 the city was enlarged and united
with several surrounding communes. To reflect this, the arms were changed,
and the black/white cross was added in the base, since the newly integrated
communes were historically part of the duchy of Westphalia (and hence of
the archdiocese of Cologne). The new arms
were granted in 1979. Source: Hostert 1979.
