Presentation

According to its website, the Partido Socialista del Uruguay (Socialist Party of Uruguay) was founded on 1910. Its most important member in its first time was Emilio Frugoni that became one of the first socialist deputies (representatives) in Uruguay.

In 1920 the party split in two groups: some of them formed the Communist Party of Uruguay, but Emilio Frugoni along other socialists did not accept Leninist ideas, and continued the Socialist Party in other group since 1921.

In 1971 the Socialist Party was one of the political parties (alongside the Communist Party, the Christian Democratic Party and other small political parties) that founded the Frente Amplio coalition.

The Socialist Party (with other smaller political parties) is inside a larger Frente Amplio's group called Espacio 90 (Space 90).

The Socialist Party of Uruguay is a member of the international group Socialist International alongside Nuevo Espacio and a lot of socialist and social-democrat political parties from around the world.

Flag

The Flag of the Socialist Party of Uruguay is a red flag with the acronym of the group in white letters (PS). Both letter appear "united".

This design uses the colors commonly used in a lot of socialist and social-democrat parties around the world: red and white. Communist parties on the other hand, commonly use red and yellow colors. Of course there are exceptions to this rule.

The common color (red) used by socialists, social-democrats, and communists worldwide has its origins in the red flags used by La Commune in Paris in 1870.

Pictures of Socialist Party of Uruguay flags appear next to Frente Amplio flags and Espacio 90 flags in a picture of a socialist convention in the website of the Official Portal of the Socialist Party.

A drawing of an Espacio 90 flag and the Socialist Party of Uruguay flag appear also in the Official Party Website and in the Official Portal of the Socialist Party.

[Socialist Youth Flag]
by Francisco Gregoric, 20 Dec 2004

The Juventud Socialista (Socialist Youth) is the youth movement of the Partido Socialista del Uruguay. It uses a red flag with a white drawing of a left fist. Its design is very similar to the one used by the Socialist International. However in the flag of the Socialist Youth of Uruguay the fist appear in a vertical way without the "socialist rose". The name of the group: "Juventud Socialista" appear in cursive white letters.

At the website of deputy (representative) Daisy Tourné there are pictures of flags of the Socialist Party, Socialist Youth, and Espacio 90.
