Description of the flag

This is the flag of King George County in the Tidewater region of the state, along the Potomac River. I've seen this flag flying several times at King George County High School and at the rest stop on Rt. 301 on the Virginia side of the Potomac River. The flag is white and features the shield from the coat of arms of King George I of Great Britain, for whom the county is named and under whose reign it was established. The shield itself features all of the realms over which George I held claim: in the first quarter, England and Scotland; in the second quarter, France; in the third quarter, Ireland; and in the fourth quarter, Brunswick (symbolized by the two gold lions on the red field), Lunenburg (symbolized by the blue lion rampant on the field of yellow with red hearts), Hanover (symbolized by the white horse on the red field), and over the fourth quarter is the Crown of Charlemagne symbolizing his connection to the Holy Roman Empire. The shield that I used is modified from one that I found at the site Héraldique Européenne. A simple, but not unattractive, flag design.
