Description of the flag

The website at www.peoriaaz.com/index1.htm shows one of the simplest municipal seals yet found anywhere. A wide concentric circle in white has the words 'CITY OF' at the top, two five-pointed stars at either side, and the word 'PEORIA' at the bottom, all in capitals. The center of the seal depicts a rising sun in gold with golden rays in a pale blue sky over a range of mountains in the far distance in brown which serve to divide the center of the seal into two halves. The lower half depicts an irrigated field in brown and pale green with a saguaro cactus in green to the left and what appears to be a date at the foot of the cactus.

The seal was adopted through a motion of Council held December 14, 954. The seal was chosen through a contest. The winner, David Montoya, a Peoria high school student at the time, was paid $25.00. The seal itself reflects the history of Peoria, which started as a farming community with cotton fields. Also included is a saguaro cactus on a mountain, which reflects the desert environment.
