The municipality of Podčetrtek was formed by parts of the municipality of Šmarje pri Jelšah in 1995. The municipality is in Savinjska region, and its eastern border is the river Sotla (in Croatian, Sutla) that forms the border with Croatia. In the name of the municipality can be read the word Thursday, which was the market day in the place after which it is named. The German name of Podčetrtek was Windisch Landsberg.

The flag and arms are prescribed by Decision Odlok o grbu in zastavi Občine Podčetrtek, adopted on 30 September 1999 and published in the official Slovene gazette Uradni list Republike Slovenije, nr. 87/99, 28 October 1999, with effect on 12 November 1999.
The symbols were designed by Valt Jurečič of Heraldika d.o.o. and Heraldica Slovenica, who kindly provided drawings from which the images shown on this page were made.
The flag is rectangular, in proportions 2:5, vertically divided yellow-blue-yellow, the middle field being square and containing the attribute from the coat of arms, the sun and four swallows flying towards it.

Coat of arms of Podčetrtek - Image by Željko Heimer, 21 January 2002
The coat of arms of Podčetrtek includes in a blue field a golden sun, from chief corners flying two silver swallows and in base two hills over which water is pouring.
Valt explained that the design of the symbols of Podčetrtek took more than three years. The symbols were intended to be a promotion means for the municipality. Therefore the sun, hills and two springs of the healing spa were shown. The silver swallows ("everlasting springtime") should symbolize the return of people to their homeland.
