The coat of arms of Metlika is prescribed in the successive municipal statutes Statut Občine Metlika, adopted on 1 June 1995 and published in the official Slovene gazette Uradni list Republike Slovenije 41/1995; Statut Občine Metlika, adopted on 25 March 1999 and published in the official Slovene gazette Uradni list Republike Slovenije, 34/1999; and Spremembe in dopolnitve statuta Občine Metlika, adopted on 28 June 2001 and published in the official Slovene gazette Uradni list Republike Slovenije, 71/2001.
The coat of arms of the municipality of Metlika is the historical coat of arms of the town of Metlika. It pictures on a silver field on green base a red castle with one tower around which are standing two ravens, looking outwards. This coat of arms is related to a legend involving ravens watching from a watch tower.

Former coat of arms of Metlika - Image by Željko Heimer, 13 September 2004
According to Zalokar [zal90], the coat of arms used before the 1990s was slightly different from the current one, although the heraldical elements are the same (and the blazon is more or less the same). The shield is semicircular with a golden outline, the tower is artistically different with ravens of considerably smaller size and the base includes three small hills.
