Presentation of Kamnik

Kamnik (26,172 inhabitants) is an old town located under the range of mountains named after it Kamniske Alpe (Kamnik Alps), some 20 km north of Ljubljana. The municipality is among the largest ones, if not the largest (by the area), in Slovenia since it also includes a wide area of uninhabited high mountains, which are also a popular tourist destination.

Municipal flag of Kamnik

The flag and coat of arms of Kamnik are prescribed in the amendment to the municipal statutes Spremembe in dopolnitve statuta Občine Kamnik, adopted on 23 April 1997, and published in the official Slovene gazette Uradni list Republike Slovenije, 25/1997.

The flag is horizontally divided blue-white with the coat of arms in the middle. It is similar to the former flag with only minor changes in the coat of arms.

The use of the flag and arms is prescribed by Decision Odlok o grbu in zastavi Občine Kamnik, adopted on 24 September 1997, and published in the official Slovene gazette Uradni list Republike Slovenije 62/1997.
This Decision gives colour specifications:
- Blue: SCC 39
- Yellow: SCC 3
- Green: SCC 67
- White: N1 N95
and construction details for the coat of arms and the flag.

The aforementioned amendemnt to the municipal statutes changes two details of the coat of arms description. Veronika is now depicted as "half-woman half-serpent" and the crescent is now "moon's first quarter".

The flag of Kamnik is mentioned in Banderas municipales de Eslovenia [drn96i], published in Banderas [ban] #58 (March 1996). It was adopted in 1988, probably after a historical image (maybe a seal). It is horizontally divided white-light blue with the coat of arms in the middle.

The 1995 municipal statutes Statut Občine Kamnik, adopted on 24 May 1995, and published in the official Slovene gazette Uradni list Republike Slovenije, 39/1995, describes the flag as follows:

The flag is white-blue with the coat of arms in the middle. The white field is above and is of the same size as the blue one. The proportion of the width and length of the flag is one to two.

The 1995 municipal statutes Statut Občine Kamnik, adopted on 24 May 1995, and published in the official Slovene gazette Uradni list Republike Slovenije, 39/1995, describes the coat of arms as follows:

The coat of arms has shape of an oval shield on which is in the gate of a tower topped with small embattlements and a picture of Veronika, half-maid half-fish with a crown on her head. In the base of the tower on each side are adorsed two dragons. To the left [that is heraldic sinister] of the tower is a six-pointed star and to the right [dexter] is a moon's last quarter.

According to Stanič & Jakopič [j2s05], the coat of arms recalls a municipal seal dated between 1277 and 1309.

Historical flag of Kamnik

The Ljubljana historical archives (Zgodovinski arhiv Ljubljana, Enota za obljubljansko obmosje) list in their catalogue the following item:
Drzavni in avtonomni organi do maja 1945 Občina Kamnik KAM-102, v KAM-38 občinska zastava 1907-1935.
Therefore they preserve the municipal flag of Kamnik used between 1907 and 1935.
