About the flag

The Clube Sport Marítimo is the main sports club of the city of Funchal, capital of Madeira, and therefore of the whole archipelago. The club was founded in the beginning of this century by english emigrants, numerous at the time in the islands, and presently it’s football team in in the portuguese first division, and already played in the european competitions. The flag reflects closely the club’s origins: it’s a red St. George’s cross on a green field. A white lozenge is superimposed in the center of the flag and contains the club’s emblem: a nautical wheel with a lion superimposed facing the hoist, but looking backwards to the fly, all in proper colours, and a green-red scroll above with the club’s acronym in black capitals: C.S.M. Also interesting in this emblem is that it is not based on the civic local heraldry of Funchal, unlike most of the other club’s emblems in Portugal.
