Back in 1910, a number of different designs where proposed for the flag
of the new republic, and this originated a large and not always peaceful
debate. A number of conciliation projects
arose in the process, and this one is a very peculiar one. It was published
in some newspaper or magazine, labelled «projecto de conciliação nacional
— para todos os paladares" (project for national conciliation —
for all possible tastes), and I won’t even try to describe it.
Jorge Candeias, 15 Jun 1998
This is a curious flag: it’s a proposal for a new portuguese flag after
the fall of the monarchy in 1910. The proposal was designed in Octuber or
November of 1910. In the center the quinas
were formed by playing cards (five of hearts, diamonds, spades and clubs,
except the central card that is the ace of hearts).
