This city of 9,224 inhabitants was founded on March 30, 1871.
All that I found about the flag is that it was created by Mr.
José [Jose'] Luis Medina Caraballo, historian from Las Marias.

It is in west central Puerto Rico. In olden times it was
famous because so many men and women were called Maria. An old
name for the pueblo was 'Parroquia del Dulce Nombre de Maria'.

"The three trees in the arms are the tree of Mary, a local
tree and thus used as a canting symbol. The monogram is again a
symbol for the St. Mary. The chain in the bordure is a symbol for
the Lares uprising of 1868 against the Spanish occupation."
