Introduction

There is a proposal for 8 autonomous states in the new federal republic, but there is another proposal for 15 states with names based not on ethnicity, but rather on geographical terms. The proposals are still open to discussion and in the meantime several autonomous councils had been formed claiming the status of an autonomous republics for various ethnic groups in Nepal.

About Magar Autonomous Region

The largest of the indigenous nationalities of Nepal, the Magars, number @ 1,663,000 (7.2%), live in the hill region of western Nepal, and are of Hindu religion (majority) and Buddhism. They speak languages of the Tibeto-Burman branch of Sino-Tibetan family. They are known as "the bravest of the brave" and were heavily recruited to the British and Indian Gurkha regiments. The Magar Autonomous region was declared in 2004 and its leadership is allied with the Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist. The flag of the Magar Autonomous Region is red and displaying white bow and arrow with the white star in the canton. There is another flag of the Magars, a "national" one, with the Magar emblem shown on the either white or blue field and framed in the either blue or red narrow border.
