Boxmeer municipality

Number of inhabitants (1 Jan 2003): 29.358; area: 115,37 km². Settlements: Beugen, Boxmeer (seat), Groeningen, Holthees, Maashees, Oeffelt, Overloon, Rijkevoort, Sambeek, Vierlingsbeek, Vortum-Mullem.
Boxmeer is a merger of the former municipalities of Boxmeer, Oeffelt, a part of Wanroij (Rijkevoort) (1 Jan 1994), and Vierlingbeek (1 Jan 98) (The rest of Wanroij went to Sint Anthonis).
The original name of Boxmeer was Mheer. In the 13th century Jan Boc was lord of this village. So the village-name and the lord's name were united in Boc'smeer - Boxmeer (Buck's lake). The buck returned first in the CoA, later in the flag (adopted 9 Mar 1999). Mr. Boc, however, had a fierce lion depicted on his CoA. Somewhere in time and space the lion was eaten by a buck...
