Zutphen municipality

Population (1 Jan 2003): 36.182; area: 25,10 km². Settlements: Zutphen (seat).
Zutphen is an old town in north Gelderland, in the 11th century seat of the Lords, later Counts of Zutphen - the region south of Zutphen is still called 'Graafschap' ('County'). It was member of the Hansa league and in the 17th century an important border fort.
The unofficial old flag was horizontally BW.
Flag: three horizontal stripes of blue and white, proportioned 1:3:1; at 1/3 flaglength a red anchor-cross, of which the arms are 1/6 flagheight.
Blue and white are from the municipal arms; the anchor-cross seems to have been the specific city-emblem. In the Middle Ages the war-banner showed a "root cruyce" (red cross) on a white field. Several old Zutphen families had this cross also on their arms.
