Number of inhabitants (1 Jan 2003): 40.585; area: 48,27 km². Settlements: Harderwijk (seat), Hierden
Harderwijk is an old Zuiderzeetown; townrights in 1231; member of the Hansa league (1285); 1647-1811 Provincial Academy - now famous for its Dolfinarium.
The flag of Harderwijk was Yellow over Blue; can't say anything about the new one.
Jarig Bakker, 28 September 1999

Harderwijk has since 30 June 1966 an officila municipal flag, used at sports events and festivities. It consists of 6 equal horizontal stripes of Hansa-yellow and Nassau-blue. The central stripes are divided by 6 embattlements.
In the past there were ties with the Hansa and the House of Nassau. The embattlements symbolize the position of Harderwijk as a fortress. Six stripes have been chosen for each faculty at the former university of Harderwijk (1647-1811) - the faculties were: theology, oriental languages, law, philosophy, medicine, and history. Famous students: Boerhave and Linnaeus.

Harderwijk flag in Uruzgan

[Harderwijk flag in Uruzgan] image by Ivan Sache, 2 Mar 2008

On 25 February 2008, "de Stentor" shows a photography taken in "Kamp Holland", Uruzgan, Afghanistan, with two soldiers displaying a big flag of Harderwijk.
The design of the flag globally matches the design shown above but the embattlement in the middle of the flag is different:
- FOTW: embattlement starting with a blue half-square and ending with a blue square; 5.5 blue squares and 4 yellow squares;
- Uruzgan: embattlement starting with a yellow square and ending with a yellow half-square; 5 blue squares and 5.5 yellow squares
To transform the FOTW design into the Uruzgan design, mirror the flag and counter-colour  the embattlement.
