Buren municipality
Number of inhabitants: 26.000; area: 136,34 km². Settlements: Asch,
Beusichem, Buren, Eck en Wiel, Erichem, Ingen, Kerk-Avezaath, Lienden (seat),
Maurik, Ommeren, Ravenswaaij, Rijswijk, Zoelen en Zoelmond.
In 1974 Beusichem was incorporated in Buren; on 1 Jan 1999 Buren merged
with Lienden and Maurik to form the new municipality of Buren.
The modern municipality is in the Betuwe region, western Gelderland,
in one of the most beautiful Dutch landscapes (especially in spring). The
tiny city of Buren is an old fortified town and at the end of the Middle
Ages the center of a large county, which Prince William the Silent acquired
by marriage in the 16th century. Queen Wilhelmina used to travel incognito
as Countess van Buren (as does the probable future king Willem Alexander
van Buren.)
The present flag (adopted 18 May 1999) is derived from the CoA (which
was part of the CoA of William the Silent) and symbolizes the castle of
Buren. And so did the old flag, (which was adopted after 1962 and wappered
in Buren until 1999), included also in this message.
