The badges for Northern and Southern Nigeria were added to the 1889 Admiralty Flag Book by an amendment issued in March 1901. I have not seen the text that went with the illustrations and don't know whether the defaced Union Jacks were used by High Commissioners as well as Governors.

1900. Protectorate of Southern Nigeria, under a High Commissioner, formed by combining territories of Royal Niger Company south of Idah, with Niger Coast Protectorate.

1906. Colony and Protectorate of Lagos joined with Protectorate of Southern Nigeria to form the Colony and Protectorate of Southern Nigeria, under a Governor.

1914. Amalgamated with Northern Nigeria to form the Colony and Protectorate of Nigeria.
