Presentation of Ialoveni

Dear friends,
The municipality of Ialoveni (15,045 inhabitants; 31.65 sq.km) is located in the heart of Moldova, 12 km from the capital city Chesinau. It also claims to be located halfway between the Atlantic Ocean and Ural and halfway between the Equator and the North Pole.
On 11 March 1502, King Stefan allowed his vassal Duma Hurdescu to found a settlement called Cheile Isnovatului, lit., the key of the river Isnovat. The village was renamed Ialoveni on 16 April 1639. On 25 March 1977, it became the capital city of a rayon in the SSR of Moldavia under the name of Kutuzov. The ancient name of Ialovani was reinstated on 31 March 1989, and the city is now the capital city of a district in the Republic of Moldova.
There are no record of historical arms in Ialoveni. In 1986, Constantin Bogota proposed Soviet-styled arms for the city, then called Kutuzov; the proposal included a red-green-blue hay fork, a hammer and sickle, a portion of a cog-wheel and a golden ear.
For the preparation of the celebration of the 500th anniversary of the city, Mayor Anatol Moldovan launch a contest for municipal symbols. The contest was held in 2001 and there were only two applicants, Sergiu Golovco and Olga Golban. Their proposals were published in the municipal gazette and submitted to the National Commission of Heraldry. The compulsory herladry questionnary was filled by Tatiana Ungureanu and Tamara Castrasan. After a review of the historical sources and of the questionnary, Silviu Andries-Jabac designed the coat of arms, which were graphically made by Veaceslav Racov.
The arms of Ialoveni represents two significant local elements, the river Isnovat and the sherry winery "Vinuri Ialoveni", the only one of that kind in Moldova. The arms can be blazoned as: "Barruly wavy of 15 pieces gules and argent a wine glass or." The flag derived from these arms is made of 15 horizontal stripes in turn dark red and white; its proportion is 2:3.
