From 3 October 1970 to 29 November 1871, this flag was used only by an Admiral. The flags of the Vice Admiral was a blue bordered Hinomaru, and the rear Admiral flag was a yellow bordered Hinomaru. From 29 November 1871 through 7 October 1889, the flag was used by Admirals, Vice Admirals and Rear Admirals
