From combined information from the official city website and Wikipedia

Situated in the northwest of Saga Prefecture, Kyushu, Karatsu City is a castle town blessed with a variety of beautiful, natural scenery ranging from sea vistas to rivers and mountainscapes.

“Karatsu” derives from the location’s attributes as an ideal tsu (port) for passage to Kara (the ancient title for Korea and China). As the name indicates, Karatsu has been open to the world outside Japan since ancient times.

The city has area of 487 km2 and a apopulation of 129,329.

Interesting that this city has two flags.
