in french yachting review "Bateaux" issue nov 1999,
an italian reader, N Accardi of Roma, states that the courtesy
flag which a foreign yacht should fly in italian waters is the
undefaced tricolour and not as I would have presumed the civil
ensign with CoA without crown.

In Portofino, Genoa, Italy, we have founded the new Marina and
exposed the new flag. See <www.marinadiportofino.com>.
The flag is red
charged with a cross gold, in one quarter there is the San
Giorgio that is the symbol of Portofino and he's a man on the
horse that kill the dragon.

Just found a page on
YC Adriaco (Trieste, founded 1903), showing the various flags:
- Guidone sociale (Club burgee): green, a red cross throughout.
- Bandiera sociale (Club flag): green, a red cross shifted to the
hoist ("scandinavian").
- Commodoro (Commodore): swallowtailed club flag (seemingly
placing the cross in centre), a red five-pointed star in each
hoist quadrant.
- Presidente (President): as the commodore, but disks instead of
stars.
- Vice Presidente (Vice president): as the president, less one
disk (the one left is the upper one).
- Segretario (Secretary): as the vice-president, but without any
disk.
- Guidone di lunga crociera (Burgee for long cruise): as the
burgee, only considerably longer: est. height one unit, length
five units.

There is a chart with the flags of the yacht club "Circolo
del Remo e della Vela Italia", Napoli, Italy, established
November 20th, 1889 as "Canottieri Italia". The Clubīs
flag is a rectangular 2:3 red flag with a blue cross of St.
George and they have Rank flags. Itīs a very curious case, as
they have the Clubīs flag to represent the society as a whole,
but include, among the Rankīs flags, a memberīs flag . Usually
the clubīs flag is the one also used by members, but in this
case, members use a triangular shape, burgee.

which are probably the fleet captains of the rowing and sailing
teams.

Another important yacht club is the "Circolo Nautico Ugo
Costaguta", Voltri (Genova), Italy. Established in December
1898, the Clubīs flag is a white burgee with a red cross of St.
George, traditional symbol of Genoa (another Club from Genoa, the
Yacht Club Italiano, uses the same, but with colors reversed),
and a blue star in a white circle at the armsīintersection.
