From "The Encyclopedia of flags" by Alfred
Znamierowski, 1999 [zna99]: 'The flag of Florence is taken from
illustrations in the Cronaca del Sercambi (end of the 14th
century).' Caption of the illustration: Civic banner of 14th
century Florence.

On the website of the new soccer team of Florence (<www.fiorentina.it>),
Italy, a municipal flag
can be seen flying on top of the municipal stadium. See: <www.fiorentina.it/onpaper/20021213.pdf>.

There is a photo of the
gonfalone at <soalinux.comune.firenze.it>.
It is a page of the Fiorentina website but this is the gonfalon
of the city of Florence, dating from the end of the 11th century.
Jarig Bakker, 5 September 1999
From <www.splendorofflorence.com>:
"The "Gonfalone" is a large flag which is kept
inside Palazzo Vecchio -- Florence's City Hall -- that came to
Philadelphia as part of a "ceremonial gift" on the
occasion of Splendor of Florence and the renewing of the Sister
City Pact between the two cities. When this flag travels -- only
on official visits -- it is accompanied by five men in
Renaissance costume (shown below) who also play instruments
dating back to the period. "

At <www.globeit.it>
there is a page about the Florence gonfannon. It says, i.a., that
till 1251 the colors were inverted: white fleur-de-lis on red.

My brother, Eli Gutterman, came from a visit in
Tuscany with a photo taken
in Florence of decorated flag of Florence.

Above is the flag of Florence as flown from the Town Hall.

I also saw this one myself at (and in) the Florentine City
Hall, and also on in several other locations in the city in the
summer of 2006. I had the opportunity of photographing one
of them, in a one-mast ship on the Arno river, moored near
the Ponte Vecchio (old bridge), hoisted under an Italian national
flag:. The stays are decorated with small italian national flags.
Nearby, the 1st of a row of flags hoisted from the balconies of
the houses built on the Ponte Vecchio (old bridge), the same
version of the city flag, plain white with red fleur de lis
centered on it and no additional elements, or perhaps a more
squarish version of it. The other flags seem to be those
mentioned at Florence City Subdivisions. See
photos here
and here.

I located 20 flags at <www.globeit.it>.
Anyone recognizes them ?
Dov Gutterman, 21 March 1999
Those are flags of neighborhoods of Florence in the XIV
century. I didn't understand it perfecly, but these flags seem to
have had either military or sportive character.
Jorge Candeias, 21 March 1999
Those are the Florentine flags used in the medieval game of
calcio.

This site shows images of the flags. Each quarter is divided
in four "zones", which is very fractal. Historical
florentine flags existed not only for geographical entities but
also fo socio-proffessional ones: The major and minor arts have
their Coat of Arms at <www.globeit.it/artimag.html>
and at <www.globeit.it/artimin.html>
respectively. Their use in flags is shown at <www.globeit.it/artimin.jpg>.
Also the city administrative services and offices are represented
by Coat of Arms and flags: The former at <www.globeit.it/magistr.html>
and the later at <www.globeit.it/bandierai.html>,
shown in a flag-throwing routine.
