Flag of The Awakening

From an an article in the New Republic, a US political magazine (http://www.tnr.com/doc.mhtml?i=20070219&s=kaplan021907), on Iraq:

"The sheik heads up an alliance called the "Awakening," a collection of Anbar tribes who have thrown their lot in with the Americans. Seated beneath the Awakening's gilded flag, which he designed and which features a sword, scales of justice, and, less explicably, a coffee pot..."

A reader of the rival National Review (http://corner.nationalreview.com/post/?q=ZTI3OTA5ZjJmNzRlYjRiY2JlODcwM2IwYmY1ZGJiZGY=) suggests:
"I'm sure a more informed emailer will more convincingly make this point, but if I'm not mistaken in Arab culture coffee (gahwa) is ritually offered to guests as a sign of welcome and hospitality...."
