Overview

The community of Žumberak is situated west of Zagreb and south of Samobor towards the Slvoenian border in the relatively low mountains (or high hills) of the same name. Population 3500. The administrative organization in the area is somewhat dimmy, there where several changes in mid-1990's, combining and reconbining the teritorries of today neighbouring communities of Krašiæ and Sošice. The seat of administration is in Kostanjevac (population 136 [sic! 1991 census]).
It may be curiosity to mention that in Žumberak is the only compact area where there is relatively numerous population members of the Greek-Catholic Church. To keep things simple it coulsd be said that this is the Catholic community preserving the Eastern Orthodox rite, but recognizing the authority of the Pope, organized in its own diocese in Croatia, with seat of the bishop set traditionally in Križevci, though these are almost no his followers in that area. Besid ethe population of Žumberak, there are just occasional smaller groups in Slavonia, that are mostly Ukrainians and Ritheians setteled relatively late.
The coat of arms is: Vert seme of mullets argent. The symbolic of the coat of arms is, I believe, the scattered villages (silver mullets) in the green nature - the region is rich with well preserved natural forests (part of it is also a nature reservation). The coat of arms is probably adopted in mid-1990's and I noticed it on road signs in 2000. However, I have not found any info on the flag, yet, though I am pretty sure there is one.

The new statutes of the community of Žumberak: Statut Opcine Žumberak, 01.03.2006, Glasnik Zagrebacke županije, br. 5/2006, 10.03.2006, include deteminations on the flag and coat of arms only by mention, however it also claims that "the coat of arms of the community of Žumberak is the historical coat of arms of the community of Žumberak". I am not aware of existance of such item nor am I sure that there was ever in history a community of Žumberak before 1997.
