Overview

Starigrad is a community in the Zadar County, 40 km northeast of Zadar in the litoraly region beneath the Velebit Mountains. 1,900 inhabitants, 1,100  in the place of the same name itself. The National Park Starigrad Paklenica with the monumental canyon entering the sea is situated in the community, being its primary source of tourist income. Outside Starigrad are remains of Roman settelment Vegium badly damaged by bombing during the war in 1990's.
Checking the latest official gazettes of the Zadar County at <www.zadarska-zupanija.hr>, I found some news in the recently adopted statutes of several municipalities:
Starigrad: Statut Opcine Starigrad, 31.01.2006, Službeni glasnik Zadarske županije, br. 3/06, 01.02.2006.
The newly adopted Statutes include the desription of the coat of arms and the flag that must have been adopted a few years prior to it, I estimate around 2002.
The coat of arms of Starigrad is: azure between rocks argent a two-handeled vessel also argent. The rocky gorge in the coat of arms depicts the Paklenica canyon for which the community is famous (indeed it is often refered as to Starigrad-Paklenica, to differentiate from several other placed named similarly) and the vessel represents the old Roman glass jar.
The flag is blue with the coat of arms bordered golden in the middle.

In the mean time the web site of the community included the images of the coat of arms and the flag at <www.opcina-starigrad.hr>. Although the description of the coat of arms in the Statutes clearly describes the glass jar to have two handles, the drawing of the coat of arms on the site shows a simple jar without handles. I can not explain it - possibly the Statutes text is erroneous (based on some previous proposal?) or the actual description changed, but they have not (yet?) changed the wording in the Statutes.

Coat of Arms and flag were designed by Heraldic Art d.o.o from Rijeka and approved by the Ministry of Administration/Central State Office for Administration before 2006.
