The community of Nijemci is in the Vukovar and Srijem County,
30 km southeast of Vukovar, 6,000
inhabitants, 1,900 in the village of the same name. About 10% of
the population today are Serbs. The village and the entire
communty was heavily damaged in the war in Croatia in 1990's. In
16th centruy under Ottoman rule, after liberation in the
beginning of 18th century populated by people mostly from Lika
and Dalmatia. The name of the place literally means
"Germans" (possibly indicating previous population).
The 2006 statutes of the community include detaied descriptions
of the coat of arms and the flag, probably directly copied from
some previous statutes. Accoridng to that longish description I
prepare a blazon as far as I understood it: azure on a mount vert
a fortress embatteled and walled argent with loop holes and
opened doorway sable with doors maroon and a cross above the
doorway also sable, to sinister of the fortress a horse rampant
sable and in chief dexter a crescen also argent and in sinister a
mullet or. I was unable to find a picture of this coat of arms so
far.
The flag is also described: vertically divided into green and
white with the coat of arms bordered yellow in the middle. I have
a feeling that this probably describes a vertical flag.
I believe that these symbols were probably not approved by the
Central state office for administration, then again we have
several unusually multicoloured flags in this county against the
general regulations - so who knows.

According to the statutes: Statut opcine Nijemci, 28.01.2006,
Slubeni vjesnik Vukovarsko- srijemske upanije, nr.
1/06, 28.01.2006, the coat of arms of Nijemci is azure on a mount
vert a fortress embatteled and walled argent with loop holes and
opened doorway sable with doors maroon and a cross above the
doorway also sable, to sinister of the fortress a horse rampant
sable and in chief dexter a crescent and in sinister a mullet
both or and in base two embowed bars wavy argent. The flag
is vertically divided into green and white with the coat of arms
bordered yellow in the middle (this probably describes a vertical
flag).
These symbols were probably not approved by the Central state
office for administration.
I draw the vertical flag, as this is my "feeling", but
this is based on writen description only.
