Lanic'e is a community in the Istria County, its
north-easternmost community, covering the C'ic'arija highlands
and therefore relatively sparsely populated (under 3 inh./km2)
with less then 400 inhabitants in 14 villages, relatively
isolated and high up (mostly above 500 m above sea) and with
specific culture preserving some old Croatian traditions.
The coat of arms is argent a Great Yellow Gentian proper. There
is certainly a flag to go with it, but for the moment, we shall
have to wait.

The flower was identified by Dr. Walter Starmühler, a
specialist of the flora of Istria, as follows: "This plant
is without doubt Gentiana lutea subsp. symphyandra,
which is very common in this mountain region around
Lanice."
The plant is a subspecies of the famous Great Yellow Gentian
(see: <zaplana.net>).
The plant, locally known as zuta siristara, has been
protected in Croatia since 14 April 1955 according to <www.botanic.hr>.
The Great Yellow Gentian is threatened worldwide since its roots
have recognized therapeutic properties and are also used in
liquor industry.

Ivan Grbac from Rosario, Argentina, whose family is from Lanice
found a photo of the flag hoisted in the community assembly hall
in Lanice published in regional newspapers "Glas
Istre". A similar photo may be seen at <www.glasistre.hr>.
The flag is light blue with the coat of arms bordered yellow in
the middle.
