Overview

Antunovac is a community in the Osijek-Baranja County, 9 km south of Osjiek, 3,500 inhabitants of which 2,200 in the place of the same name itself. Until 1994 (or according to other sources until 1992) the official name was Antunovac Tenjski as one of several places in Croatia named Antunovac, but since it is the only community size settlement, the attribute was dropped. The church of St. Anthony of Padua, built in 1800, was much destroyed in the Homeland War.
The coat of arms and the flag are shown on the community web site at <www.opcina-antunovac.hr>. In correspondence with them I received info that the symbols were adopted in 2006.
The Coat of Arms of Antunovac is: argent St. Antony of Padua, Doctor of the Church, stantant clead as Franciscan monk proper haloed holding in his right arm Jesus Infant clead argent both haloed or and in his left hand a lilly flower argent seeded or and stalked vert. St. Anthony is the patron and namesake of the community. The catholic iconography usually show him holding the Child, for it is said that he appreared to him and also often with a flower (lilly?). St. Anthony is among the most revered saints in Croatia.
The flag is red with the coat of arms bordered yellow in the middle.
The Ceremonial Flag is dark red gonfalon with three trianguarly ending tails, the middle one being longer and each ending with a tassel, all bordered yellow and containing in the middle the golden bordered coat of arms, the name of the community above and batch of wheat ears and an oak branch below.

St. Anthony of Padua (c. 1195-1231, from his real name Fernando de Bulhões) is involved in several legendary episodes. One of the most famous stories says that he spent one night holding Baby Jesus in his arms. The lily is one of his symbols.
