Overview

Zabok was given in 1335 to a noble family who took a name after it - Zaboky. Their coat of arms, gules, a griffin and lion or holding a crown together, was taken by the moder city of Zabok for its arms. That coat of arms is also found on the light blue flag of the city. Until 1997 Zabok had the status of a community.
Željko Heimer

The coat of arms and the flag are described in the Statutes avaiblable on-line at <www.zabok.hr>: Statut Grada Zaboka, 30.11.2001, Službeni glasnik Krapinsko-zagorske županije 12/94, 17/95, 4/97, 7/99, 16/99, 4/01, 5/01 i 17/2001 of 5.12.2001.
In earlier years the Coat of Arms was used with golden beasts, but the Statutes (article 5) clearly describes them as silver (though probably it have been changed so at some point). The original colours of the Coat of Arms of Zaboky de Zabok family, whose arms Zabok took as its own, are actually unknown, the blazon in Bojnicic's 1899 armorial (part of the great [sib76] series) simply says: "Greif und Löwe gegen einander aufsprigngend, halten mit den Vorderpranken gemeinsam einen Reichapfel." (more or less: A gryphin and a lion rampant reguardant hodling together in the front paws a royal orb.) without any colour indication (but with note that the Coat of Arms is found confirmed in 1690 in the Croatian State Archives). Probably the colour uncertainiy was reason for the change. The Statutes mentions even older origin: noted in 1575 and on seal ring of 1606.
The coat of arms is set in a light blue flag off-set towards hoist (height is prescribed 2/3 of the hoist, space twoard the three cosest edges are euqal, and the Coat of Arms ratio is 5:4.5). The flag is fringed silver (probably only in more elaborate artifacts).
The previous version with the golden bests is also reported on flags around 1998. Probably the change to silver was around this date.

On the web site of the city of Zabok, one may find the text of the amendments on the decision on the description and the use of the coat of arms and the flag of Zabok: Odluka o izmjenama i dopunama Odluke o opisu i uporabi grba i zastave grada Zaboka, 9. svibnja 2006, Službeni glasnik Krapinsko-zagorske županije.
The decision does not amend anyting substantial for us, some details on the usage regulations, i.e. regarding the grants of the use and penals for misuse. However, from it we learn about previous decisions regarding the flag: Odluka o opisu i uporabi grba i zastave grada Zaboka, Službeni glasnik Krapinsko-zagorske županije, br. 12/94., 17/95. i 5/96. Unfortunately, these old gazettes are not available on-line.
