Lastovo is a community in the Dubrovnik-Neretva County, ome
100 km west of Dubrovnik, covering
the island of the same name and 45 neighbouring smaller islands,
with total population under 900. Islands of Kopite, Mrcara,
Preba are largest to the west near alstovo and island of
Suac some 20 km further west, and to the east the groups of
Lastovnjaci and Vrhovnjaci. The islands are the most outlying in
the southern Adriatic and therefore of large strategic value at
some points in history (although the most outlying island of
Palagrua is not part of Lastovo Community, but belongs to
the Komia City in teh Split and
Dalmatian County). The island joined the Dubrovnik Republic in
13th century but enjoined a large autonomy at times As a
curiosily, the last allegedly outbreak of vampirism in Europe was
reported here in 1737. Durng the Napoleonic times, in 1806 France
took control of Dubrovnik Republic and also of the island
(building fortification there), and in 1813 it was taken by the
Birtish until 1815 who maintained the blocade of the France here.
The island then became a part of the Habsburg Empire and after
World War was occupied by the Italians, and was joined to Italy
based on 1920 Rapallo Agreement (the island is known as Lagosta
in Italian). In 1943 the Tito's partisans took control of the
island. After the WWII the island was mainly used as strategic
military base and the foreigner's were forbidden to set foot on
it. The Yugoslav Army left the island only in July 1992, being
one of the last points from where they retreated from Croatia.
The historical seal is shown on wikipedia
however with no data on its date (probably around 15th century).
It obviously was used as the base of the modern Coat of Arms
adopted after 1992 (my estimate, around 2005, but I may be off
for a few years). The newly adopted and approved Coat of Arms is
shown is a poster: "Likovna rjeenja slubenih
grbova odobrena od Ministarstva uprave a na temelju pozitivne
ocjene od Povjerenstva za odobrenje grba i zastave", poster,
4 str, Heraldic art d.o.o. Rijeka (2006) and is designed by the
Heraldic Art company of Rijeka.
The coat of arms of Lastovo is: argent two pharmacists clead
gules aproned argent each holding a chalice or and jointly
holding a mortar and a pestle also or and issuant from the chief
a semi-sun in splendour or.
Looking at photo at <www.lastovo.net>,
its seems that it is quite clear that the community flag is red
with the Coat of Arms in the middle.

It seems that they originally have been Saints Cosmas and
Damian, pharmacists and patrons of pharmacists. On the seal, the
figures have nimbusesand and in the current shield they have
become laymen. See: <www.saintspreserved.com>.
On the island there is indeed a church dedicated to these saint
(see: <www.lastovo.net>).
