Société Provençale de Remorquage was founded at the end of the XIXth century. It started as a competitor of Chambon, but there was enough work for two towing companies in Marseilles, although the SPR remained slightly less important than Chambon.
In 1923, the SPR contributed to the foundation of the Venture-Weir company (later incorporated to the SPR). SPR founded in Algiers
Société Algéro-Provençale de Remorquage seven years later.
After the Second World War, the company modernized its tugboats. The
increase in the size of the ships required even bigger and more powerful tugboats.
In 1967, the company was renamed Société Provençale de Gestion Maritime (Progemar) and absorbed several towing companies in ports of the Channel and the Atlantic Ocean, New Caledonia and la Reunion. The motherhouse was
renamed Nouvelle Société Provençale de Remorquage.
