This club is the most interesting of all German rowing clubs for vexillologists.
This contribution was only possible with the great help of Mr. Bernd
KAPPMEIER, chief of the club's office and member of the board, who gave
me all relevant data of the clubs predecessors and the missing images of
the flags of former rowing-clubs.
Flags of genuine Arkona-predecessors are simply denoted as “flag”.
To the flags of the other branches of the Arkona the club’s name is added.
The club is a union of six Berlin rowing clubs with a long tradition.
After WWII for many clubs within the divided city there was the most important
question: Merge or dissolve? Some clubs had been expelled from East-Berlin
and were looking for allies in West-Berlin in order to continue their sport.

Brief History
1) On 16 January 1879 the Ruder-Gesellschaft All-Right was established.
The club renamed itself on 6 August 1886 into Ruder-Club “Berolina” e.V.
Description:
Berolina-flag (1886-1958): It was a blue flag with five white 5-point
stars (two over one over two) in the lower fly. The flag had a canton with
eight alternating blue and white horizontal stripes starting with a blue
one.

1890.

3a) Already on 2 November 1885 the Union-Ruder-Club e.V. was established.
Its name is kept in nowadays clubs name.
Description:
Union-flag (1885-1927/28)
Its flag was some kind of counterchanged Union Jack. The red field
was divided by a blue white
fimbriated centred cross and a saltire of the same colours.

3b) The Berliner Ruder-Verein “Hansa” e.V. was established on 13 July
1899.

It was a white flag divided by a blue cotized centred cross. In its

3) In 1927 or 1928, the exact date is unknown, both clubs merged forming
the new Hansa-Union Ruderklub e.V..
Description:
Hansa-Union-flag (1927/28-1962)
The flag was similar to that one of “Union” but the crossbars were
more narrow and a little bit darker, nearly black. In the centre was a
white roundel with a blue edge and a blue “H” half-surrounded by a bigger
“U”.

Probably “Hansa” joined “Union”, because the pattern of the latter
was kept in many parts.

4b) According to source the club Berliner Ruder-Club “Arcona” was established
on 1 March 1884. The existence of that flag can be proved at least for
1901.

of the nowadays flag, that is a 9-stripes flag with alternating white and
red horizontal stripes, starting with a white one, and a canton. The canton

Mr. KAPPMEIER, being asked about both names, explicitly reconfirmed
