Introduction

With reference to Montbeliard (Mömpelgard in German), both my encyclopedia of German territories and the Mattern article of 1876 indicate that there is only one such territory, the county (Grafschaft) of Montbeliard which had been in Würtemberg hands since the 15th century. Since the French revolutionaries did not accept the agreements of the French kings concerning these territories, starting in the early 1790s these were seized. Since the annexation by France was a step by step process, I am not concerned with the uncertainties in the 1790s and immediately thereafter; in any, event, from 1793 on the French had de facto control. As far as I know, there was no division of Mömpelgard (Montbeliard) — it was pretty small even undivided.

Occupied by France 11 October 1793 and annexed (recognized by Treaty of Lunéville 9 February 1801). The county was transferred to France by Prince Charles Eugene of Württemberg on 10 May 1748 [?] except the principality of Montbeliard that was under the German Empire until 1803. Red over yellow flag.

I suspect the reference to 1748 is in error (probably for 1798).
