From Ralf Hartemink's International Civic Arms website:
The old arms were granted on February 25, 1955.The quartered shield in the first quarter is the arms of the Hohenzollern dynasty. A large part of the district belonged to the Counts of Brandenburg-Ansbach, who for a long time were of the Hohenzollern dynasty. The second quarter shows the arms of the Lords von Seinsheim, who had their castle and territory in the district.
The lower part shows the arms of Franconia, the symbol of the State of Würzburg, to which a large part of the district belonged.
Literature: Stadler 1964-1972.
