Boleslav Mastai and Marie-Louise d’Otrange Mastai amassed what I understand was the world’s biggest collection of Stars and Stripes, including, among other things, the only twenty-star example. They believed that in the nineteenth century a flag made when the country was at war had the canton resting on a full-length seventh (red) stripe, which they called the War Stripe; the rest of us just ignore this, and enjoy what I think is the finest published collection of American flags, in amazing variety, including great star patterns, random patterns, flags with inscriptions, stars arranged to form letters, and much else.
